Introduction to Laboratory of Long-Term Care and Gerontological Nursing

 Equipment and layout 

    This laboratory provides equipment and layouts for aging simulation. The laboratory was developed to help students experience some of the sensory changes that older adults may experience. This laboratory also provides equipment for aging simulation exercises. Three devices help students act as active participants in their learning. The aging simulation exercise helps students experience functional losses. Undergraduate students learn more effectively in order to apply caring to older people. 

 Curriculum Description (Courses taught) 

Gerontological Nursing: This course introduces gerontological nursing concepts and theory to students in order to help them understand that the ageing process could impact older people in their physical, psychological and social aspects. Based on experiential learning, this course connects theory and practice to discuss these aspects. Therefore, students can have a better understating of how the individual, family, and community deal with the process of ageing.

Long-Term Care: Offering an overview of long-term care, the course includes lectures, practice, group discussions and experience for understanding the essential issues. Course objectives are to understand the essential concepts of long-term care and apply them to the voluntary service; understand the care needs of clients and their families; bring up the advantages, disadvantages and recommendations of long-term care services; and explore the ethical issues in long-term care services.

Community Health Nursing: The course provides didactic and clinical learning experiences for students in selected principles of community health, public and family health nursing. Students conduct in-depth community and family health assessments employing basic epidemiological principles and data collection strategies. Health education, health promotion, and illness prevention are stressed as strategies for meeting the health needs of population aggregates. The nursing process is utilized by students engaging in health promotion and maintenance strategies in a variety of community health settings.
